Indian Spot-billed Duck


Scientific Name: Anas poecilorhyncha

Population Estimate: 250K - 1.1M

Range / Habitat: Freshwater wetlands in Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong , India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam.

Field Notes: Medium-sized dabbling duck, largely grey with lighter head / neck. Dark crest and eye stripe. White-bordered green speculum. Orange spot at base of bill and yellow spot at tip which can barely be seen in the bottom photo, above (among the feathers). Eastern Spot-billed Duck with Blue speculum and lacking orange spot at base of bill.

Personal Notes: Seen at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Some sources call this the Western Spot-billed Duck.
