Scientific Name: Anas cyanoptera
Population Estimate: 250K - 350K, Least Concern status
Range / Habitat: Breeds on freshwater ponds both throughout the American west but also in southern South American. In winter the western US population moves south into Mexico and other portions of South America.
Field Notes: Small dabbling duck. Breeding male with rich, rusty-red coloration overall. Black bill and glowing red eyes. Female plain brown overall with scalloped pattern on back and flanks.
Personal Notes: Seen on both of our birding trips to Utah, first on the causeway out to Antelope Island, second on Deseret Ranch.
