Scientific Name: Aythya affinis
Population Estimate: 3M, Least Concern status
Range / Habitat: Summers on inland freshwater lakes throughout Canada and into Alaska. Winters throughout the southern US, Mexico, and Central America.
Field Notes: Small diving duck with male as above. Greater Scaup difficult to differentiate, though lesser has notched head and white not extending only half-way down the body. Male Ring-necked Duck with black back.
Personal Notes: Seen on various lakes and rivers in Minnesota.
