Yellow-headed Blackbird



Scientific Name: Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus

Population Estimate:
20M, Least Concern status

Range / Habitat:
Breeds in cattail marshes in North America, mainly west of the Great Lakes. These birds migrate in the winter to the southwestern United States and Mexico.

Field Notes:
 Adult male is primarily black with striking yellow head and breast; they have a white wing patch generally only visible in flight. The adult female is mainly brown with a dull yellow throat and breast. 

Personal Notes:
One of our favourite sights in the western US.
