Whimbrel

Scientific Name: Numenius phaeopus

Population Estimate: 1M-2M, Least Concern status

Range / Habitat: Breeds in circumpolar Arctic tundra. Winters in costal areas throughout the rest of the world.

Field Notes: Large shorebird with long, down-curved bill. Streaked and buffy overall with dark crown with a distinct light stripe in the middle. Long neck and legs.  Long-billed Curlew with much longer bill and lacking the crown.

Personal Notes: First seen in Iceland. Later photographed at the Neponset Reservoir on Deseret Ranch in Utah. Then back to Iceland where we photographed the above bird.
